About department

The Department of World History and Foreign Regional Studies, initially a separate educational and scientific subdivision, was established as an all-university department in 2006. Until 2011, the department served mainly historical disciplines.
Since 2011, “Sinology” and “Japanese Studies” directions have been functioning on the basis of the department, thanks to which the university department has also been granting graduate degrees. The department became a part of the Institute of Humanities in 2012. The main directions of the department’s scientific activity are conditioned by the versatility, reflected in its very name. Having a relatively small personnel, the Department of World History and Foreign Regional Studies ensures the scientific development and research of a wide range of relevant issues connected with world history, Russian studies, Armenian studies, Caucasian studies, western studies, the theory and history of civilizations, sinology, Japanese studies, etc.
The department regularly organizes international conferences, workshops and seminars on topical issues of historiography, ancient studies, medieval studies, Russian studies, sinology, Japanese studies, religious studies, cultural studies, etc.; publishes collections of articles and collective monographs, methodological manuals, etc. The department has several university and international research groups. Leading foreign and local specialists are invited to conduct master-classes. The graduates of the department are in demand in the Republic of Armenia and abroad.
The department is developing dynamically and resolutely.
